Lawn Renovation & Scarification
About this service

The Siran approach to lawn renovation.

Most lawns that look thin, spongy or patchy aren't short of feed — they're choked. Years of dead grass and moss build up as thatch at the base of the sward, stopping water, air and seed from reaching the soil. On the heavy Wealden clay across much of the High Weald, compaction makes it worse. A proper renovation deals with the cause, not just the colour. We measure the lawn, check thatch depth and look for problems such as chafer grubs or poor drainage before recommending anything. Then we scarify to pull the thatch out, aerate where the ground is compacted, clear every bit of debris, top dress and overseed. Hollow-tine aeration is done where it's needed rather than as standard. Early autumn is the best window, when the soil is still warm and the rain returns; spring is the second option. Every renovation comes with clear aftercare notes on watering and the first cut, so the new grass establishes properly.

In East Sussex, we know the gardens, the soils and the rhythm of the year. East Sussex homeowners come to us because they want a calm, premium standard of care from a gardener who knows the area — and lawn renovation & scarification is one of the services we are most often asked for. Whether your garden is a small village plot or a generous family lawn, our approach is the same: considered work, tidy finish, honest pricing.

Mayfield's gardens are shaped by Wealden clay — a rich, heavy soil that holds moisture well but rewards preparation. Our work here often focuses on lawns that need careful aeration, clay-tolerant planting selections, and borders that benefit from regular mulching to prevent capping. The mature trees lining Rotherfield Lane and the village's older properties create sheltered microclimates that we plan around visit to visit.

We can fold lawn renovation into a regular fortnightly or monthly visit, or carry it out as a one-off job — whichever suits you. Either way, every visit ends with the garden left clean, the green-waste taken away, and you free to enjoy the result.

05Frequently Asked

Common questions, plainly answered.

If your question isn't here, please feel welcome to call or WhatsApp — we always respond personally.

Early autumn (September to October) is ideal — warm soil and autumn rain give new seed the best start. Spring works too, with a little more watering.

Yes. Scarifying is deliberately tough on the lawn and it can look bare for two to three weeks. That's the thatch coming out so new grass has room to grow.

We can, or we'll leave clear guidance for your own mower or robot mower on when to restart and at what height.

If the lawn is beyond saving, yes — see our Turf Laying service. We'll always tell you honestly which option makes more sense.

Yes — Rotherfield Lane is our home base. Mayfield is genuinely our local village, not just a postcode we list.

Often — many of our regulars live in older Mayfield homes with mature, characterful gardens that need a careful, traditional approach.

Usually within a week for established services. New clients often start with a single tidy or assessment visit before agreeing a regular schedule.
